Fantasy Earth Zero - Scout by BlueSaved Fantasy Earth Zero - Scout by BlueSaved
[Download for full view. Sorry for the large file size.]
[EDIT, 11/11/2010]: I changed the character's right foot (his right), since people were telling me that the first version of the image was confusing in that region.

Submitted for the Fantasy Earth Zero character design contest. Obviously, he's influenced by Native American culture. I tried to balance that out with a few fantasy elements, such as the armor under his clothing and the design for his bow. I didn't get to add as much detail as I wanted, but I learned a lot while making this, so I'm happy.

He is a bamf O_O! You should have won, totally T.T.

the bow looks awsome! It kinda dosn't look like he's holding the arrow though......unless he's using magic :D

Thank you so much. ^_^ Yeah, not the first criticism I've gotten on his right foot. If he was bare-legged, I swear it would make more sense, but I just had to give him the poofy pants.

And I bet you could do weapons. I hardly draw them, but I just studied some references and threw together the elements I liked.

I really aprecciate someone who asks for critiques. Sometimes Iīm so stubborn I donīt realize the positives aspects of critiques, but thatīs not about me. Letīs speak about your art.
I could say is an AWESOME piece. Really. I love the perspective. The caracteristics are very well mannered. You thought really a lot about the carachter, however there are things you could avoid. Number one: Why does the arrow look like itīs floating? And his fingers are out of the string. It felt a bit weird. Number two: His right foot have an odd shape. I got the perspective idea, but still, it feels odd. You did good on colors, but you need to blend the colors a bit more, like on the left leg where you have some white, and it would be nicer to use a light brown and blend it with the shadow color.
Please dontīmisunderstand me, I really liked our art. The details on the bow are very good. And I hope I was of any help to you.
Good luck!

Thank you, I do appreciate the honest feedback. To answer about the arrow, its because the image captures the moment of release on the string. I studied a few videos on the release of an arrow from a compound bow, and surprisingly the string stays pretty rigid and simply vibrates a bit before snapping back into place. Its hard to see the blur on the arrow unless you download for the full view, so I'll have to make that more obvious next time. Yeah, the right leg bothered me a bit... I originally sketched out the leg shape underneath, and it made perfect sense before covering it up with the pants. I should have had the fabric lie closer to the leg to explain the shape of the foot a bit more. As for the blending, I have to admit, it was somewhat of a rush job in order to meet the deadline, so the colors ended up a bit blockish. I'll try to pay more attention to that on future pieces. Thank you very much for being so thorough and thoughtful, I really appreciate it!
